In March, the Governor vetoed a bipartisan bill to increase the base student allocation to keep up with inflation. Lawmakers failed to secure enough votes to override the veto.

A well-funded education system is the backbone of Alaska’s future. An investment in public education is an investment in Alaska families, Alaska businesses and the Alaska economy. Our success depends on attracting and keeping hard-working Alaskans in Alaska, and that starts with supporting education. Statutory funding for public education hasn't been increased since 2017, during which time inflation has sharply risen. School districts are facing severe deficits, leading to increased class sizes and laying off teachers.
