Hundreds of thousands of Alaskans enjoy public lands every year. Alaskans depend on public lands for both subsistence and livelihood. Alaskans use public lands year-round for hunting, fishing, foraging, hiking, snowmachining, and camping. Local businesses and communities depend on public lands through tourism, guiding, outdoor recreation, and resource-based jobs.

The threat

Recent proposals in Washington would allow federal public lands to be sold off. Selling public lands could eliminate our access for hunting, fishing, subsistence use, and recreation. It would also reduce opportunities for local economic activity tied to outdoor use. These decisions to sell public lands could be made in DC, and without a combined effort Alaskans will have no say in this process.

The 907 Initiative has launched a public awareness campaign to keep Alaskans informed about the ways that decisions made in Washington are affecting the lives and livelihoods of Alaskans. The public lands which Alaskans rely on are now under threat, thanks to recent political decisions made from Washington. These actions affect Alaskans, all across the state, as well as the very things that make us different from the lower-48. Every Alaskan should understand how policy decisions in DC are impacting our lives here at home.
